when john kerry sponsored a bill to honor the civil rights activist rosa parks with a statue in the u.s. capitol. it took eight years from the bill being introduced, but today president obama finally unveiled that statue, making rosa parks the first african-american woman to receive this kind of permanent honor in statuary hall in the capitol. in the house, the effort to recognize rosa parks for refusing to give up her seat on a bus for inspiring the montgomery bus boycott, for helping to ignite the civil rights movement, in the house, the rosa parks bill that came to fruition today was sponsored by congressman jesse jackson jr. of illinois. mr. jackson, like mr. kerry, was not around to see the unveiling of the rosa parks statue, and that's because jesse jackson jr. resign his seat in congress amid first health worries and financial worries and ultimately last week plead guilty to misappropriating campaign funds for personal use. because jesse jackson resigned his seat, in a matter of weeks somebody new is going to be there to replace him. late last night we found out who that person

northwest of santa rosa. startling discovery, a triple homicide. the sonoma county sheriff's department was called to the home on rock station road after 3:00 this afternoon. our nbc chopper is on the scene and the investigators and deputies are on the scene down below where three men were found dead inside of a house. this is new video now just in to our newsroom. a sheriff's lieutenant says all the victims were shot to death. we don't yet know their identities or how they are related. we will continue to bring you updates on this case as we get them. >> now to another disturbing story, this one involving a teenaged girl apparently murdered. her naked body dumped in a fair field park. tonight we know who that girl is and police are hoping that a photo of her last known image will help lead them to her killer. jodi hernandez has been following the story since it first broke. jodi, it's hard to see the fphoo and video. >> reporter: police did identify that girl. they also released a chilling image taken of her just minutes before she was last seen alive. they are hoping that photograph w

chairman of the policy committee, rosa delauro of connecticut. >> thank you very much, and i am again honored as you are to stay here with our colleagues today to address these issues. if i may quickly paraphrase from a report by the national women's law center, when it are more likely than men to be poor at all stages of their lives because of the ongoing employment discrimination and greater responsibilities for unpaid care giving. these dangers indiscriminate and across-the-board cuts threaten vital services for women and their families and the services they rely on every single day in order to make their way. they also threaten our economy and will cost women thousands of jobs. while there will be a ripple effect throughout the economy, many of the jobs destroyed by this sequester will be public sector jobs that are disproportionately held by women. when it make up 57% of public sector jobs. while the private sector is has continued to gain jobs of the past year, the public sector has lost 74,000 jobs, 85% of these being 63,000 jobs held by women and they were lost by women. cuts

of the questioning yesterday. i sat in that courtroom for about 45 minutes before having to leave for the rosa parks ceremony, and i was very, very concerned by what i heard. now, at the time i was there, i heard nothing from him. but i did hear from a few of the others, and i'm concern ed that there is going to be ap attempt to water down the voting rights act of 1965, and all i would say to these justices, please look at the record. if you look at the record and make your decisions based upon the record that's before you, then i'm not going to have a problem. but if you are bringing a set agenda to this process, there's going to be a problem for us because i know what he said in the past. >> you say that, sir, that you didn't hear justice roberts, but what about justice scalia? yesterday he suggested, and i'm quoting him, that the right to vote is, quote, a racial entitlement, and he also suggested that lawmakers like you, sir, can't be trusted to make decisions about the voting rights law. in fact, in a discussion about the four previous votes congress took to renew it, justice scalia said he was
will be a day to remember. rosa parks, the mother of the civil rights movement who refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus in montgomery, alabama, in 1955 will get her spot among other giants of american history. tomorrow a statue of parks will be unveiled in the original house of representatives known as statutory hall. it will sit near the statue of dr. martin luther king and others. it's an honor. i applaud both republicans and democrats for it. but at the same hour tomorrow just across the street at the supreme court, the voting rights act faces its greatest challenge. th this challenges everything they stood for. in the last year voter i.d. laws have been pushed all over the country in 37 states. we've seen billboards in minority communities that threaten and scare away voters. we've seen blocking of voter registration drives. scaling back on early voting and massive lines. and we've herd desiline's story the voter who stood in lines for hours to cast her ballot. so let's remember what we're honoring. we cannot go back now. we've made too much progress to turn back the clocks. tom
